South Korean Shipbuilder HD Hyundai to Sell Gunsan Yard to HJ Shipbuilding

By MGN EditorialMarch 13, 2026 at 01:54 PM

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has agreed to sell its Gunsan shipyard to HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, which could allow the Busan-based yard to build larger vessel types.

In a move that could open the door for HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC) to expand its vessel capabilities, the Busan-based shipyard has agreed to acquire HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Gunsan shipyard, according to a filing by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering. The deal, reported by maritime news outlet Splash247, will see HJSC take over the Gunsan facility from HD Hyundai, one of South Korea's largest shipbuilding conglomerates. The acquisition could allow HJSC to diversify into building larger ship types beyond its current focus on smaller commercial vessels. "This acquisition represents an important strategic move for HJ Shipbuilding as it looks to grow its shipbuilding capabilities and capacity," said industry analyst James Kim. "The Gunsan yard's infrastructure and facilities will give HJSC the ability to take on more complex and sizable projects." The sale of the Gunsan yard is part of an ongoing restructuring at HD Hyundai, which has been divesting some of its shipbuilding assets in recent years. The company is focusing more on its core offshore and industrial equipment businesses. For HJSC, the deal provides an opportunity to expand beyond its traditional market segments and compete for a wider range of commercial shipbuilding contracts. Industry observers will be watching closely to see how the company leverages the additional capacity and capabilities of the Gunsan facility.
