Tanker Market Outlook Clouded by Weak Ship Recycling
By MGN Editorial•February 27, 2026 at 04:00 PM
Analysts warn that low ship recycling activity could threaten the strength of the tanker market in the coming years.
The tanker shipping market is facing an uncertain future, as analysts warn that low ship recycling activity could threaten the strength of the sector in the coming years.
According to Niels Rasmussen, Chief Shipping Analyst at Hellenic Shipping News, the crude tanker market is expected to remain strong in 2026 and 2027, but could see some weakening in 2027 as fleet and supply growth accelerates. The product tanker market, on the other hand, is forecast to weaken during both years as fleet and supply growth picks up.
The key concern is the low level of ship recycling activity, which Rasmussen says is 'threatening market strength.' Ship recycling is an important mechanism for managing the supply of vessels in the tanker market, as older, less efficient ships are removed from service. However, the data shows that recycling activity has been subdued in recent years, which could lead to an oversupply of tonnage and put downward pressure on freight rates.
'We expect continued strong market conditions for crude tankers in 2026 and 2027 despite some weakening in 2027,' said Rasmussen. 'On the other hand, we forecast that the product tanker market will weaken during both years as fleet and supply growth accelerates.'
The analysis comes amid broader uncertainty in the global economy, with the Eurozone's industrial confidence indicator dipping slightly in February 2026, according to Hellenic Shipping News. This could have implications for demand for seaborne trade and the tanker shipping sector.
Overall, the tanker market appears to be facing a complex set of headwinds, with the low level of ship recycling activity emerging as a key concern for industry analysts. Shipowners and operators will need to closely monitor these trends and adjust their strategies accordingly in the months and years ahead.
