Tidewater Completes Acquisition of Wilson Sons Ultratug, Expanding Brazilian Offshore Footprint
By MGN Editorial•September 1, 2026 at 06:00 AM
US offshore vessel operator Tidewater has finalised its acquisition of Wilson Sons Ultratug, adding 22 platform supply vessels and significantly strengthening its position in the Brazilian offshore market.
Tidewater has completed its acquisition of Wilson Sons Ultratug, marking a significant strategic move for the US-based offshore vessel owner as it deepens its presence in one of the world's most active offshore energy markets.
According to Seatrade Maritime, the deal adds a fleet of 22 platform supply vessels (PSVs) to Tidewater's existing portfolio, providing the company with substantially expanded access to Brazil's offshore sector — a market dominated by Petrobras and characterised by strong, sustained demand for support vessel services.
## Strategic Significance
Brazil's pre-salt offshore fields have long been among the most prolific deepwater developments globally, driving consistent demand for PSVs and other offshore support vessels. By absorbing Wilson Sons Ultratug's Brazilian operations, Tidewater positions itself to capitalise on ongoing exploration and production activity in the region, while competing more directly with established local and international operators.
The acquisition also reflects a broader consolidation trend within the offshore support vessel (OSV) sector, where leading operators have been pursuing scale and geographic diversification as the offshore energy market recovers from the prolonged downturn of the mid-2010s. Tidewater, already one of the largest OSV operators globally, has been actively expanding its fleet and market reach in recent years.
## Fleet and Operational Impact
The addition of 22 PSVs represents a meaningful increase in Tidewater's operational capacity in South America. PSVs are critical workhorses of the offshore industry, supplying drilling rigs and production platforms with equipment, fuel, water, and provisions. A larger Brazilian fleet allows Tidewater to offer clients greater operational flexibility and coverage across the country's extensive offshore acreage.
Wilson Sons, a well-established maritime services group with deep roots in Brazil, had operated the Ultratug joint venture as part of its offshore support business. The transaction effectively transfers that operational expertise and client relationships to Tidewater's global platform.
## Market Outlook
With Petrobras continuing to invest heavily in its offshore production programme and international oil companies maintaining active positions in Brazilian waters, demand for PSV services is expected to remain robust. Tidewater's strengthened local presence puts it in a competitive position to secure long-term contracts as vessel utilisation and day rates continue their recovery across the OSV sector.
The completion of this acquisition underscores Tidewater's confidence in the long-term fundamentals of the Brazilian offshore market and its commitment to growing its international footprint through targeted consolidation.
