Travel Insurance Gaps Pose Risks for Maritime Vacationers

By MGN EditorialFebruary 21, 2026 at 12:48 PM

Experts warn that many popular vacation activities are not covered by standard travel insurance policies, leaving maritime travelers exposed.

As maritime industry professionals finalize their 2026 vacation plans, the experts at SOVENTURE are highlighting a frequently overlooked gap in travel insurance coverage that can affect families, cruisers, honeymooners, and other leisure travelers. According to the press release, 'popular vacation activities like scuba diving, snorkeling, jet skiing, and other water sports are often not covered by standard travel insurance policies.' This can leave maritime travelers exposed to significant financial risks if they are injured or require emergency medical care while participating in these common vacation activities. 'Many travelers assume their travel insurance will protect them, but they don't realize the fine print often excludes coverage for the very activities they plan to enjoy,' said SOVENTURE CEO Samantha Peters. 'This can result in unexpected out-of-pocket costs that can ruin a hard-earned vacation.' The maritime industry publication gCaptain notes that this coverage gap is particularly concerning for cruise ship passengers, who may participate in shore excursions and other activities that fall outside their base travel insurance. The Maritime Executive reports that honeymooning couples and families with children are also vulnerable, as they tend to engage in a wider range of adventurous vacation pursuits. To avoid these risks, SOVENTURE recommends that maritime travelers review their travel insurance policies carefully and consider purchasing supplemental coverage for adventure sports and other excluded activities. 'It's a small investment that can provide invaluable peace of mind and financial protection,' added Peters.
