Trump Administration Launches Environmental Review for California Offshore Oil Leases

The U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has begun preparing an environmental impact statement to evaluate potential offshore oil and gas lease sales along the California coast.

The Trump administration has taken the first step towards opening up new areas off the California coast for offshore oil and gas development. According to gCaptain, the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) announced on Wednesday that it will begin preparing a programmatic environmental impact statement (PEIS) to evaluate potential offshore lease sales across California's outer continental shelf. This move comes as part of the administration's efforts to expand domestic energy production, despite concerns from environmental groups and coastal communities about the risks of offshore drilling. The PEIS will assess the potential environmental impacts of lease sales in the Pacific outer continental shelf planning areas, which include waters off the coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington. The announcement has already drawn criticism from conservation organizations, who argue that offshore drilling poses unacceptable threats to marine ecosystems and coastal economies that rely on tourism and fishing. 'Offshore drilling is inherently dangerous and has no place off the California coast,' said a spokesperson for the Sierra Club. 'We will fight this tooth and nail to protect our communities and environment.' The BOEM will accept public comments on the scope of the PEIS over the next 45 days, after which it will begin the process of drafting the environmental review. This is likely to be a lengthy and contentious process, as any potential lease sales would face significant opposition from state and local officials, as well as environmental groups. Nonetheless, the Trump administration appears determined to push forward with its 'energy dominance' agenda, even in the face of growing concerns about the climate impacts of fossil fuel extraction.
