Trump Warns Iran Over Strait of Hormuz Closure

By MGN EditorialMarch 10, 2026 at 03:21 PM

US President threatens 'death, fire and fury' if Iran attempts to block the strategic Strait of Hormuz shipping chokepoint.

In a stark warning to Iran, US President Donald Trump has threatened 'death, fire and fury' if the country attempts to close the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping chokepoint. According to reporting from Seatrade Maritime, Trump claimed the US is 'very prepared' for a conflict with Iran, stating 'We're in a very strong position. If they do something, it'll be a very bad mistake.' The Strait of Hormuz, located between the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, is a narrow waterway through which around a fifth of the world's oil supply passes. Closure of the strait would have severe global economic and energy market consequences. Iran has previously threatened to block the strait in response to US sanctions. Trump's comments come amid heightened tensions between the US and Iran following the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal. The US has also recently deployed additional military assets to the region, including an aircraft carrier strike group and Patriot air defense batteries. While Trump stated the US is 'very prepared' for a conflict, he also hasn't ruled out the possibility of the US taking control of the Strait of Hormuz. 'We're not going to have Iran take over that strait,' he said. 'We'll have it open. We'll have it open 100%.' The maritime industry will be closely watching developments, as a closure of the Strait of Hormuz could severely disrupt global energy and shipping markets. Analysts warn that even the threat of closure could drive up oil prices and freight rates. Industry groups are urging caution and diplomacy to prevent an escalation of tensions in the strategically vital waterway.
