U.S. Proposes Tanker Insurance Plan to Encourage Gulf Transits, But Naval Escorts Face Limits

BIMCO says a U.S. proposal to provide political risk insurance for vessels in the Persian Gulf could help restore confidence, but naval escorts may have limited effectiveness.

In response to rising tensions in the Persian Gulf, the Trump administration has proposed providing political risk insurance for commercial vessels operating in the region, according to a report from gCaptain. The world's largest shipping association, BIMCO, says this plan could help encourage more tankers to transit the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil supply. However, BIMCO also noted that naval escorts, another measure being considered, may have limited effectiveness in deterring attacks. 'The U.S. proposal to provide political risk insurance for vessels operating in the Persian Gulf could help restore some confidence in the market and encourage more tankers to continue their transits through the Strait of Hormuz,' said BIMCO's Chief Shipping Analyst, Peter Sand. The Strait of Hormuz has seen a number of recent maritime incidents, including the reported attack on a container ship this week that trapped nearly 150 vessels in the waterway. Tensions in the region have escalated following the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and the imposition of sanctions. While naval escorts could provide some protection, BIMCO cautioned that they may have limited impact, as 'the number of naval assets available is unlikely to be sufficient to provide full coverage for all transiting vessels.' The maritime industry is closely watching developments in the Persian Gulf, as disruptions to shipping in the strategic waterway could have significant implications for global trade and energy markets. BIMCO's analysis underscores the complex challenges facing policymakers and industry as they seek to maintain the security of commercial maritime operations in the region.
