India Approves ₹334.89 Crore Elevated Corridor at Visakhapatnam Port to Boost Cargo Efficiency
By MGN Editorial•August 18, 2026 at 06:00 PM
India's Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has sanctioned a 3.584km internal flyover at Visakhapatnam Port Authority, targeting improved cargo evacuation and reduced traffic congestion within the facility.
## India Greenlights Major Infrastructure Upgrade at Visakhapatnam Port
India's Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has approved the construction of a 3.584-kilometre elevated corridor at Visakhapatnam Port Authority, in a move designed to significantly enhance operational efficiency at one of the country's busiest major ports.
The project, valued at ₹334.89 crore (approximately $3.50 million USD), was sanctioned by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, according to Port Technology International. The internal flyover is intended to streamline cargo evacuation processes and alleviate chronic traffic congestion that has long been a logistical challenge within the port premises.
### Strategic Importance
Visakhapatnam Port, located on India's eastern coastline in Andhra Pradesh, is among the nation's major port trusts and handles a diverse cargo mix including coal, petroleum products, fertilisers, and general cargo. Congestion within port boundaries has historically impacted turnaround times and overall throughput capacity, making infrastructure investment of this nature a critical operational priority.
The elevated corridor is expected to create a dedicated, unimpeded route for cargo vehicles, separating freight movement from other internal port traffic. This type of grade-separated infrastructure is increasingly recognised across the global ports sector as an effective solution for high-volume facilities where surface-level congestion constrains productivity.
### Broader Context
The approval aligns with India's broader Sagarmala Programme, the government's flagship port-led development initiative, which has prioritised port modernisation and connectivity upgrades across the country's coastline. Investments in internal port infrastructure complement wider efforts to improve last-mile connectivity and reduce logistics costs for Indian exporters and importers.
The project represents a continued commitment by the MoPSW to upgrade the physical capacity of India's major port estate, as the country positions itself to handle growing trade volumes driven by expanding manufacturing and export ambitions under initiatives such as 'Make in India'.
Construction timelines and contractor selection details had not been disclosed at the time of reporting. Industry observers will be watching the project's progress as a benchmark for similar internal infrastructure upgrades at other congested Indian port facilities.
