Wan Hai Expands Newbuild Fleet with LNG and Methanol-Ready Containerships

By MGN EditorialMarch 10, 2026 at 03:21 PM

Taiwanese container shipping line Wan Hai Lines has placed orders for six new LNG and methanol-ready containerships at Chinese shipyards, continuing its fleet expansion efforts.

Taiwanese container shipping company Wan Hai Lines has announced a major expansion of its newbuilding program, contracting six additional containerships at Chinese shipyards. According to Splash247, Wan Hai has ordered four 6,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships at Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding. The company also placed orders for two 3,000 TEU methanol-ready vessels at Guangzhou Shipyard International. The new orders build on Wan Hai's existing newbuild pipeline, which already includes 30 ships on order. The company has been actively investing in fleet renewal and expansion to keep pace with growing demand in the container shipping sector. 'The new orders demonstrate Wan Hai's commitment to modernizing its fleet with more environmentally-friendly tonnage,' said the Taipei-headquartered carrier in a statement. 'The LNG and methanol-ready designs will help the company reduce its carbon footprint and meet stricter emissions regulations.' The move aligns with broader industry trends, as container lines increasingly turn to alternative fuels like LNG and methanol to power their vessels. These lower-emission options are seen as critical for the shipping industry to meet ambitious decarbonization targets. Wan Hai's newbuild program underscores the carrier's ambitions to strengthen its market position and capitalize on favorable conditions in the container shipping market. The company has benefited from surging freight rates and high demand for container capacity in recent years.
