Johnson Controls has released a new Absorption Chiller Reference Design Guide aimed at converting waste heat into productive cooling capacity, a technology with potential applications for energy-intensive maritime and port infrastructure.
Johnson Controls has introduced an Absorption Chiller Reference Design Guide that outlines how waste heat can be converted into cooling capacity, reducing electrical demand for cooling systems by up to 44% and unlocking significant additional power for energy-intensive operations.
While the guide is primarily positioned toward data centre and AI computing infrastructure, the underlying technology carries direct relevance for maritime and port sector operators grappling with rising energy costs and decarbonisation pressures. Absorption chillers — which use heat rather than electricity as their primary energy source — have long been considered a viable efficiency tool aboard large vessels and within port terminal facilities, where waste heat from engines, generators, and industrial processes is abundant.
According to PR Newswire, the reference design blueprint provides a structured roadmap for facilities to harness on-site waste heat, potentially freeing up to 97MW of additional capacity from existing power infrastructure. Johnson Controls notes that this approach could generate 'billions of dollars in additional revenue' from power assets already in place, without requiring new grid connections or generation capacity.
For the maritime industry, the implications are noteworthy. Large container terminals, LNG facilities, and cruise port operations routinely manage substantial thermal waste from power generation equipment. Applying absorption chiller technology in these environments could reduce shore power demand, lower operational costs, and contribute to Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions reductions — all priorities under tightening IMO and EU regulatory frameworks.
Aboard vessels, absorption cooling systems have historically found application on LNG carriers, where boil-off gas provides a ready heat source. The Johnson Controls guide may prompt renewed interest in broader shipboard applications, particularly as shipowners seek to optimise energy efficiency in compliance with the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) rating system.
The release of a standardised reference design is significant in that it lowers the engineering barrier for operators considering waste heat recovery projects, providing a replicable framework rather than requiring bespoke system design for each installation.
As the maritime sector continues its transition toward lower-emission operations, technologies that extract greater utility from existing energy inputs — rather than simply substituting fuel sources — are expected to play an increasingly important role in meeting efficiency targets.
