XCMG Unveils World's First 14,000-Tonne Ring Crane in Landmark Heavy Lift Milestone

Chinese crane manufacturer XCMG has rolled out the world's first ring crane with a 14,000-tonne lifting capacity, marking a significant breakthrough in ultra-heavy lift technology with major implications for offshore and industrial construction projects.
Chinese heavy equipment manufacturer XCMG has announced the completion of the first main unit of what it describes as the world's first ring crane capable of lifting 14,000 tonnes, according to a PR Newswire release dated 29 August 2026. The milestone represents a historic advance in ultra-heavy lift crane technology and is expected to have far-reaching consequences for large-scale offshore, energy, and industrial construction projects globally.
Ring cranes — also known as ring lift cranes or ring-rail cranes — are distinguished by their circular rail systems, which allow the crane to rotate around a fixed centre point while distributing enormous loads across a wide footprint. This design makes them particularly suited to lifting and positioning extremely heavy modules, such as those found in offshore platform construction, LNG facility development, and large-scale petrochemical plant assembly.
The 14,000-tonne capacity of XCMG's new machine dwarfs many of the largest conventional crane vessels and land-based lifting systems currently in operation, positioning it as a potential game-changer for projects that have historically required multiple cranes working in tandem or specialised heavy lift vessels.
Xuzhou-based XCMG — one of the world's largest construction machinery manufacturers — has been steadily expanding its presence in the heavy lift and crane sector. The development of this ring crane underscores China's broader ambitions to lead in high-specification lifting equipment, particularly as global demand grows for large offshore wind turbine installations, modular refinery construction, and complex infrastructure projects.
While full technical specifications and commercial availability timelines were not detailed in the initial announcement, the rollout of the first production unit signals that the machine has moved beyond the prototype stage. Industry observers will be watching closely for details on deployment, certification, and whether the crane will be offered for international projects.
For the maritime and offshore construction sectors, the emergence of a land-based crane with this capacity could influence project logistics and cost structures, potentially offering an alternative to expensive heavy lift vessel charters for nearshore or quayside assembly work.
