BOYD Steamship Corporation is the oldest and largest ships’ agency at the Panama Canal. Founded by William Y. Boyd, who was later joined by his brother, Robert J. Boyd, and General George W. Goethals, the famed builder of the Panama Canal. Goethals was an active partner in the company until his retirement in 1926. In 1919, in the city of Colon, the Boyds opened the first bonded warehouse, precursor of the now flourishing and international famous Colon Free Zone. During this period, the Boyd Corporation operateda fleet of shipstransporting cargoes throughout the Caribbean and down the coast of South America. During the Second World War, they operated some 40 oil tankers out of the Port of Balboa. Throughout the period, the Boyd organization continued their business as agents for vessels transiting the Panama Canal. Long considered the premier ships’ agency at the Panama Canal, BOYD Steamship Corporation provides their clients with the most up-to-date information about Canal conditions, expedites ships transits by virtue of having an experienced staff on duty 24 hours per day, renders final invoices within 15 days of a vessel’s sailing plus many other services that a ship owner or operator may require.

The Chamber of Shipping has proudly served the international shipping industry community in British Columbia since 1923. The Chamber is a forum for the gathering, developing and disseminating of information both to the membership and shipping communities around the world. Information relating to new developments in shipping services, government legislation as well as alternative services and opportunities in trade, commerce, or education are handled by the Chamber and its dedicated committees. Established as a non profit society in 1923, The Chamber of Shipping of British Columbia provides its services to three categories of members. 'Full Members' are drawn from the ship owners, operators and agents, representing the foreign flag international deep sea segment of the B.C. shipping community. Associate or Service Membership is offered to other entities which see value in a close relationship with the Chamber. The Chamber has 140 members, in total. The objects define a role of facilitation and interaction, in the interests of members, with all levels of government and the wider marine community. The President, Staff and Board of Directors are all actively involved in the work of the Chamber in fulfilling its mandate. This is achieved through their involvement in standing and adhoc committees devoted to key topics, for example,Ship and Port Operations, Navigation and Pilotage, Cruise, Liner, Legislation etc. The facilitation role is further exemplified through the Chamber's role in the registration of vessels under the Canadian oil spill regulations. The Chamber has also spearheaded the formation of an informal coalition, The Western Marine Community (WMC), with the aim of ensuring an equitable regional apportionment of the Coast Guard's cost recovery program.

Background The British Shippers' Council is a strategic policy making arm of FTA. Its members comprise industry representatives from a cross section of businesses who require international freight transport, logistics, distribution and shipping services. The Freight Transport Association (FTA) is a leading UK trade association and serves industry as users of transport & distribution services by all modes. FTA's 11,500 member companies represent all sectors of UK industry and consign 70% of UK visible exports, 90% of all freight moved by rail and also operate nearly half of the UK fleet of commercial vehicles. Our Strength At the heart of FTA is its unrivalled knowledge of transport and distribution, shared between 360 staff operating out of five UK offices and Brussels. This knowledge resource is delivered through local, national and European representation together with a comprehensive range of commercial services. Our Objectives FTA's membership is a broad church of mostly freight service providers (primarily road freight) and users of freight services (i.e. shippers). The British Shippers' Council has traditionally focussed most of its attention and activities on the maritime and air freight services and on trade facilitation through customs and documentation. Policies are made which aim to provide the right conditions in which industry is able to take advantage of a wide range of competitive and efficient services. Such services would enable them to enhance rather than hinder their global supply chains and promote the competitiveness of their products in overseas markets. FTA's Rail Freight Council is a forum of both users and operators and UK track infrastructure owners - all of whom are FTA members. This Council is FTA's principal strategic policy making body for matters to do with rail freight, both domestic and European. Together with FTA's Road Freight Council, largely comprising freight vehicle operators, FTA seek to promote developments in the freight industry which benefit industry and make their supply chains more efficient.

Broadwater Energy has been formed as a joint venture between TransCanada Pipelines Corporation (TCPL USA LNG, Inc.) and Shell US Gas & Power LLC to address energy shortages threatening the Long Island Sound region of New York and Connecticut. Broadwater plans to build and install a facility resembling a large ship, to be moored in Long Island Sound between CT and NY. The facility will receive imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from LNG tankers. LNG will be "re-gasified" at the floating facility and transported by underwater pipeline connecting to the existing Iroquois gas pipeline for further distribution. By 2010 Broadwater would be safely and reliably delivering a large new supply of clean-burning natural gas to homes, businesses and power generation plants. Please click on the website icon above for a detailed explanation of the Broadwater LNG Project. Your input will help Broadwater build a project compatible with the public interests in the region.
