The American Victory Mariners Memorial & Museum Ship will memorialize all mariners, who built, sailed and defended America’s merchant fleet. The ship will provide a first-class, hands-on maritime educational experience for visitors of all ages, from schoolchildren to veterans who served aboard these vessels, and depict life aboard merchant ships. The ship will also serve as a training vessel for the Tampa Bay maritime workforce and provide a state-of-the-art facility for veterans reunions, meetings, receptions, special events and upscale dining. The SS American Victory will be the only museum ship of its type in the southeast U.S. The ship joins one other Victory and two Liberty ships which have been restored and operating as museums and memorials, including the SS Lane Victory in Los Angeles, the SS John W. Brown in Baltimore, the SS Jeremiah O’Brien in San Francisco.

Not withstanding their obvious collectability, ship models have, through the ages, formed an intrinsic part of the world's shipbuilding industry. It is still normal practice for the shipyard to provide a scale model of the proposed vessel. This can be for tank testing, design and development, marketing, or boardroom purposes. Engine room layouts and internal piping models are also an indispensible tool when designing the complex machinery space of modern ships. In addition, accurate scale models of both historic and modern vessels are supplied to many major U.K. museums.

For over 150 years each compass manufactured by E.S. Ritchie & Sons, Inc. was recorded by serial number in hand written ledgers. These ledgers are still maintained at the Ritchie factory, shown above, located in Pembroke, MA USA. The first successful liquid dampened compass was awarded a U.S. Patent in 1860. It is just one of the compasses that we see highlighted in company literature dating back to the formation of E.S. Ritchie and Sons. Early compass dials were hand painted using egg white based paint for the background and India ink for the graduations. This photo shows three different types of early float chamber dials. Today's dials are printed using modern lithographic processes on extremely light aluminum or composite dials. Ritchie manufactured all the US Navy standard compasses for over forty years. The dial on the left shows the prominent float chamber which reduced weight on the pivot, reducing wear and greatly improving performance. The four vertical rods are actually bundles of needle magnets which gave this compass the power to lock on to magnetic north. Ritchie Compasses have won many awards for design and engineering excellence in the past 150 years. An early Ritchie liquid filled compass with a floating dial is exhibited in the Albert Museum of Science and Industry in England, proudly displayed along with a collection of nautical instruments created by the famous Lord Kelvin.

Fall River, MA, United States
Welcome to The Marine Museum at Fall River where you will see one of the world's largest TITANIC exhibit. A 28 foot detailed model is the centerpiece in the collection of artifacts and memorabilia. The famous R. M. S. Titanic, so carefully designed to be called "unsinkable", on her maiden voyage took 1500 people with her to a watery grave on April 14, 1912. The museum's collection includes photographs taken by the Wood's Hole Oceanographic Institution, a recorded account of the tragedy by a Titanic survivor, and a video tape of the vessel's discovery. The Marine Museum's newest exhibit, The Andea Doria, is now open. This exhibit includes photographs, videos, artifacts and a model of the Italian liner which sank off the coast of Nantucket in the summer of 1956.
