Poland's Gaz-System Marks Key Milestone with FSRU Launch for Gulf of Gdańsk LNG Terminal

By MGN EditorialMay 19, 2026 at 06:00 PM

Polish gas transmission operator Gaz-System has launched a new floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), marking a significant step forward in the completion of a new LNG terminal in the Gulf of Gdańsk.

## Poland Advances LNG Infrastructure with FSRU Launch Poland's national gas transmission system operator (TSO), Gaz-System, has announced a major construction milestone with the launch of a new floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) destined for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the Gulf of Gdańsk, according to Offshore Energy. The launch of the FSRU hull marks a tangible step toward the completion of what will become one of Europe's newest LNG import facilities, reinforcing Poland's long-term strategy to diversify its energy supply and reduce dependence on pipeline gas from Russia. ### Strategic Importance for European Energy Security The new terminal is part of a broader European push to expand LNG import capacity in the wake of the energy security challenges that have reshaped the continent's gas supply landscape in recent years. Poland has been among the most proactive nations in building alternative gas infrastructure, having already operated the Świnoujście LNG terminal — one of the first in the Baltic region — since 2016. The Gulf of Gdańsk facility, once operational, will provide additional regasification capacity, enabling Poland to receive LNG cargoes from a wider range of global suppliers including the United States, Qatar, and Norway. FSRUs offer a cost-effective and relatively rapid deployment solution compared to land-based terminals, making them an increasingly popular choice for countries seeking to fast-track import infrastructure. ### FSRU Technology at the Core An FSRU functions as both a storage vessel and a processing unit, receiving LNG from carrier ships, storing the liquefied gas onboard, and regasifying it for injection into the national grid. The floating nature of the unit allows for flexible siting and can be redeployed if infrastructure needs change over time — a key advantage in a dynamic energy market. Gaz-System has not yet confirmed a final commissioning date for the Gulf of Gdańsk terminal, but the FSRU launch represents one of the most visible and technically complex phases of the project's construction timeline. ### Broader European Context Europe has seen a surge in FSRU deployments since 2022, with Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, and Finland among the countries that have rapidly brought floating LNG import terminals online. Poland's latest project continues this trend, further knitting together a more resilient and interconnected European gas network. For the maritime and energy industries, the project represents continued demand for specialised shipbuilding, marine engineering, and LNG logistics services across the supply chain.
