the great clipper ships, many vessels headed for the Port of Quebec have run aground along the banks of the St. Lawrence or on its countless shoals. Stories of tragic shipwrecks abound, and no one knows how many seamen and passengers have lost their lives to the river. In the 17th century, it became apparent that trained river pilots were needed. In 1647, Abraham Martin became the first King’s Pilot authorized to guide ships up and down the St. Lawrence. Today, even though pilotage plays a crucial role in ensuring safe navigation and protecting the environment, few people know about river pilots or what they do. We invite you to discover this exciting profession through the history and the services provided by the Corporation of Lower St. Lawrence Pilots (Corporation des pilotes du Bas Saint-Laurent).

To maintain our high reliability record, each transport is thoroughly engineered and computer calculated to fully comply with ISO 9001 and ISM quality and safety standards. In addition to the preparation of each transport by our engineers, all loading and discharging operations are supervised by our experienced superintendents to ensure flawless performance of all procedures described in the transport manual. Experience has learned that consulting Dockwise engineers in a project's conceptual design phase, can be a key factor in substantially saving both fabrication and transportation costs. The seakeeping characteristics of our heavy transport vessels allow for reduction of structural reinforcements for transport-only purposes. Projects in which Dockwise consulting engineers were closely involved from the early design stage, include the transportation of the BP-Harding PDQ jack-up drilling rig, the Hibernia Mega Module Move, the transportation and launching of the ONGC/SHW jacket. The essential role of engineering in our business is also illustrated by conversions of some of our vessels, by which our engineering expertise has been the key to opening up new possibilities for our fleet and services:

For more than forty years, Eurogrit BV has been a major producer and supplier of blastcleaning abrasives for surface preparation of metal and stone materials. The company has been known even longer as a renowned producer and supplier of specialty sand and gravel products. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our history The roots of the company’s activities date back to the year 1818, when Pieter van Loon established himself in the small village of Vreeswijk, as an independent supplier of sand quarried from a nearby riverbed. The company has subsequently been handed from generation to generation and continues to grow. After the 2nd World War, expansion was found in other materials such as fillers and flooring products. By then, silica sand was also being marketed as an abrasive for sandblasting. Gradually however, it became known that sandblasting carried a health risk through a condition of the lungs known as “silicosis”. As a result, in 1957, the Dutch government promulgated the Silicosis Law, which included the Sandblasting Decree, banning the use of (silica) sand for all sandblasting applications (in-house or outside, dry and wet alike) in The Netherlands. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Export By reacting swiftly to this new situation, the company has successfully managed to build up an important market position in the industry supplying a variety of abrasives that substitute and/or complement silica sand. In the early 1970s, the first export efforts were initiated, based on quality, speed and service and the company has since built a worldwide reputation as a reliable source of supply for virtually every kind of abrasive. A substantial part of the business is now export-related, with the company and its products represented in almost all parts of the world. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our locations The companys headoffice is located in The Netherlands, at Nieuwegein - a municipality comprising the old village of Vreeswijk, the original founding place of the company. Modern production- and export shipping facilities are operated at both Nieuwegein and Dordrecht. The sales department at the Nieuwegein head office, services the Benelux countries and our export department is always on the alert keeping in touch with our customers and partners throughout the world.
