When 20-year-old Danish blacksmith Vilhelm Petersen sailed into Boston Harbor, little did he know that his journey would lead to the establishment of American Tool Companies, Inc. In 1902, "Bill" Petersen settled in Minden, Nebraska, where he worked for a fellow Danish blacksmith, keeping horses shod, plow shares sharpened and wagons repaired. Bill Petersen was an inventor at heart. With the introduction of the automobile and farm tractor, blacksmithing was on the decline. During the long Nebraska winters, Petersen experimented with his ideas. In 1921, he invented and patented a unique wrench with a "vise-like" grip. By 1924, Petersen had refined his invention by adding a locking lever. He patented the enhanced tool and gave it an innovative name that would become world famous: VISE-GRIP® locking pliers. He registered the distinctive clasped hands logo, a symbol that today represents the most recognized hand tool brand in the world. American Tool Companies, Inc., led by Allen Petersen, the founder’s grandson, has evolved into a leading global manufacturer and marketer of hand tools, cutting tools and power tool accessories. The company has more than 4,400 employees and manufacturing facilities throughout North America, Europe, Brazil, and the Pacific Rim. Today, its product lines include VISE-GRIP locking pliers, clamps and wrenches, IRWIN® wood boring and cutting tools, QUICK-GRIP® clamping products, RECORD® hand tools, MARPLES® woodworking tools, JACK® hand saws, POWERPRESS® pipe clamps, TURBOMAX® drill bits, PROSNIP® snips, MARATHON® and SPRINT® saw blades, UNIBIT® step drills, HANSON® taps, dies and drills, CHESCO® hex tools, SPEEDBOR® wood boring bits, and STRAIT-LINE® marking tools. Quite a dramatic change from the day a young Danish immigrant traveled to America and established his place in history. To see some of the historic events from American Tool and from around the globe, choose a period of time below.

In 1972 we broke ranks with Dahl-Beck Electric (our current parent company) and became incorporated under our current name. In the early days we supplied Dahl-Beck and other marine contractors in the bay area with the marine electrical apparatus essential for the electrical repair and retrofitting on board shipping vessels at the Port of San Francisco. We continued to operate as a specialty marine electrical distributor at 2nd and Howard Street (San Francisco) until 1981 when Bill Beck and George Vaio spearheaded our move to an 18,000 square ft. facility in Emeryville California to better serve the Port of Oakland container vessels and the terminal facilities located there. Today we find ourselves once again under the same roof as our parent company Dahl-Beck Electric where we operate within an even larger 46,000 square ft. and more efficient facility in Richmond California. Over the years we have taken on many industrial lines and have become one of the largest independent electrical distributors in the San Francisco Bay Area. Just last year we acquired Potter Electric of San Francisco which gave us a strong position in both the entertainment and government electrical markets. We are a third generation family owned and operated company with active principals in all three Beck Industry companies. The Beck family prides itself on being reasonable people who care about the history and future of this business, and the extremely dedicated employees who make us shine on a daily basis. Stories of tragic shipwrecks abound, and no one knows how many seamen and passengers have lost their lives to the river. In the 17th century, it became apparent that trained river pilots were needed. In 1647, Abraham Martin became the first King’s Pilot authorized to guide ships up and down the St. Lawrence. Today, even though pilotage plays a crucial role in ensuring safe navigation and protecting the environment, few people know about river pilots or what they do. We invite you to discover this exciting profession through the history and the services provided by the Corporation of Lower St. Lawrence Pilots (Corporation des pilotes du Bas Saint-Laurent).

For more than forty years, Eurogrit BV has been a major producer and supplier of blastcleaning abrasives for surface preparation of metal and stone materials. The company has been known even longer as a renowned producer and supplier of specialty sand and gravel products. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our history The roots of the company’s activities date back to the year 1818, when Pieter van Loon established himself in the small village of Vreeswijk, as an independent supplier of sand quarried from a nearby riverbed. The company has subsequently been handed from generation to generation and continues to grow. After the 2nd World War, expansion was found in other materials such as fillers and flooring products. By then, silica sand was also being marketed as an abrasive for sandblasting. Gradually however, it became known that sandblasting carried a health risk through a condition of the lungs known as “silicosis”. As a result, in 1957, the Dutch government promulgated the Silicosis Law, which included the Sandblasting Decree, banning the use of (silica) sand for all sandblasting applications (in-house or outside, dry and wet alike) in The Netherlands. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Export By reacting swiftly to this new situation, the company has successfully managed to build up an important market position in the industry supplying a variety of abrasives that substitute and/or complement silica sand. In the early 1970s, the first export efforts were initiated, based on quality, speed and service and the company has since built a worldwide reputation as a reliable source of supply for virtually every kind of abrasive. A substantial part of the business is now export-related, with the company and its products represented in almost all parts of the world. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our locations The companys headoffice is located in The Netherlands, at Nieuwegein - a municipality comprising the old village of Vreeswijk, the original founding place of the company. Modern production- and export shipping facilities are operated at both Nieuwegein and Dordrecht. The sales department at the Nieuwegein head office, services the Benelux countries and our export department is always on the alert keeping in touch with our customers and partners throughout the world. Location Dordrecht In 1988 a branch office was established in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to promote and sell our products in the Middle East. Location Nieuwegein -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Knowledge and know-how We are very proud of our business - but we take the greatest pride in our people, who really are our most important product. Our staff are a highly motivated team that is always ready to handle your orders and enquiries, quickly and efficiently responding to your questions or requests for advice.
